For All the Right Reasons, Carpet is a Great Choice for Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carpet scores high on health and safety, acoustics and\ncomfort, and environmental benefits. And, new research shows carpet no more\nlikely to transfer bacteria than hard surface floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titled, \u201cThese Factors Drive School Carpet Success,\u201d the article describes how \u201ccarpet is a better choice for schools than most commonly used flooring materials.\u201d Among the factors that make it the preferred choice, the article lists sustainability, health concerns, safety issues, ergonomic considerations, and acoustic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under sustainability, the article stresses the importance of\nproper cleaning and maintenance: \u201cProperly maintained carpeting stays in use\nand out of the waste stream longer, contributing to lower lifecycle costs.\nFurthermore, when product, installation, and maintenance supplies and labor\ncosts are considered over a 15-to-20-year period, carpet delivers lower\nlifecycle costs than other floor covering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the issue of carpet and health, interesting new research\nfrom the healthcare design industry shows that carpet is no more likely to\ntransfer bacteria than hard surface floors. \u201cOne recent study reported that\ncarpet surfaces are no more likely to transmit infections than hard surfaces.\nIn fact, it was suggested that certain hard-surface floors may have higher\npotential to transmit infections. While no cause could be defined for this\nobservation, one theory proposes that a carpet’s textured surface limits\nhand-surface contact area and that the tendency of carpet to increase the\ncontact time of cleaning solutions allows them to perform more effectively.\nFurther, it has been suggested that carpet appears to sequester\nbiocontaminants, keeping them out of the range of contact for transmission and\nout of the breathing zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the related issues of carpet\u2019s effect on asthma and\nallergy and indoor air quality, the article states: \u201cTo date, carpet has not\nbeen proven to provoke asthma and\/or allergies. Its low VOC levels improve the\nindoor air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, carpet may emit the lowest levels of VOC among\ncommon flooring choices and is one of the lowest-emitting products used in new\nconstruction and renovation-much lower than products such as paint. Carpet\ncertified by the Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label Plus program emits very\nlow levels of VOCs for very short periods of time and is unlikely to act as an\nallergy activator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
